  • The Java community is working on the 'Service Data Objects' specification (JSR 235) to create a better framework for handling entities in service-oriented architectures. The goals of SDO are to help simplify and unify data access across different data source types. Data transport is one aspect of SDO. Another aspect is the change tracking mechanism, which is closely related to data transport: unchanged values of the original tree are omitted when serializing the data graph.....

  • Matthew Peters talks about how in this issue he will survey some of what Service Component Architecture (SCA) for PHP offers the programmer. We have high hopes that the combination of reusable components, which can be called either locally, or remotely via Web Services, with the same interface will be of interest, and that anyone who works with Web Services may be interested in the ease with which an SCA component can be deployed as a Web Service: a simple matter of adding annotations and dropping the component under the web server's document root.

  • Last month an alliance of leading vendors announced progress on specifications to define a language-neutral programming model for application development in SOA environments. They call this specification Open SOA Collaboration. In essence, they are proposing a new standard to create and manage IT, making the process of integrating different third-party SOA technologies "less onerous," they say. Or, we can call this a standard way of delivering services, making it easier to work and play well together.......
